The 10 Best Waterproof Mattress Protectors: Natural, Luxury, Hypoallergenic

The best waterproof mattress protectors prevent sweat, tea, coffee, and… other liquids… from seeping into your mattress and ruining it.

We’ve ranked ten of the best waterproof mattress protectors for you to choose from, depending on the material or brand you prefer, but we’ve found one which, according to our research, is the best on the market.

The Adoric Mattress Protector is made of super-soft cotton on the top and polyurethane barrier on the bottom, so that it feels nice and smooth on your skin but effectively protects your mattress in case of accidents. And, although it is 100% waterproof, it is also breathable and light, so you’ll feel cool and dry in bed.

To function well, people should sleep between seven and nine hours every night. Although that remains a dream for many of us in this busy day and age, it’s what we should be aiming for (I, for one, don’t need too much encouragement). That’s why it’s crucial that we invest in a good bed and an excellent mattress.

But accidents happen to us all (don’t we know it), and the liquid and mattress combination can be disastrous. As well as causing unsightly stains, the liquid can cause mold and bacteria to grow, worsening allergies, skin conditions, and overall hygiene. That’s why owning a waterproof mattress protector is an excellent way of keeping your mattress clean and extending its life.

Waterproof mattress protectors have improved a lot in recent years, so forget about that plasticky, crinkling sound they used to make. The best products are now vinyl-free and made with materials that are waterproof, breathable, hypoallergenic, and natural. You’ll find the best of the best in our top ten ranking of best waterproof mattress protectors, so read on and make your choice!

Why Are Mattress Protectors Important?

Not everyone is sold on the idea of buying a mattress protector, but that is most likely because many of us don’t know that mattress protectors are useful.

First of all, waterproof mattress protectors are essential because they keep our mattress free of stains by preventing liquids from reaching the mattress.

Secondly, a quality waterproof protector will help prevent the proliferation of mold, mildew, microbes, dust mites, and bed bugs.

Seems pretty important, doesn’t it?

Waterproof mattress protectors are not to be confused with mattress pads (which are similar but tend not to be waterproof) and mattress toppers, which are specifically designed to change the feel of the mattress and make it more comfortable.

Mattress protectors do not add any cushioning to the mattress, and in fact, they are paper-thin, just like typical sheets. They do, however, help in many other ways.

What Does a Mattress Protector Do?

Protects your investment: Mattresses cost a lot of money, but thankfully many come with long term warranties, anywhere from five years to lifelong in duration. But did you know that even a small stain can void a warranty? That means that you won’t be able to return your mattress or get money back if anything happens — all because of an easily avoidable stain.

A waterproof mattress protector ensures that your mattress stays spotless, no matter what you end up spilling all over it (breakfast in bed sounds idyllic in theory, but the risks are quite high). A clean mattress means a valid warranty, so your investment will be protected for years.

Prevents the proliferation of mites, mold, and bacteria: No one likes to think about this, but mattresses are a breeding ground for microbes, mold, dust mites, fungi, and allergens. These little critters can adversely affect your health, causing skin problems, and difficulty breathing. Do you ever wake up with itchy eyes, a runny nose, or a persistent little cough that lessens during the day?

It might be because of what’s living in your mattress.

A quality waterproof mattress protector will prevent the proliferation of these microscopic beings, but will also stop you and your skin from coming directly into contact with them and reducing their effect on your health.

Keeps your mattress clean, even after accidents: If you have young children, you know that there is really nothing you can do to avoid little disasters. Things are going to get messy, and it’s not worth stressing about it. Instead, there are some precautions you can take to make life easier (for everyone).

A waterproof mattress protector is one such precaution. Whether it’s juice, milk, or paint that gets spilled all over the bed, you won’t have to spend a whole day trying to wash and dry out the mattress. All you have to do is strip the bed, put your mattress protector in the washing machine, give it a spin, and voilà! As good as new.

Mattress protectors are also useful in the case of bedwetting. Although bedwetting is an entirely normal part of growing up, it can cause a lot of mess, stress, and discomfort. A mattress protector helps keep the chaos to a minimum and reduces the stress and embarrassment for your kids.

Keeps the mattress feeling like new: It’s not only spilled drinks that ruin mattresses. You might not notice, but you (like all of us) sweat a fair share during the night, and not only when it’s hot. Like any other liquid, sweat seeps into the mattress, and over the years, it builds up and contributes to the degradation of the materials.

You’ll notice your mattress sagging, being less bouncy, and generally feeling old and worn. By preventing even that little bit of sweat from getting through, a good waterproof mattress protector can extend the life of your mattress and keep it feeling comfy and like-new.

What Should Your Mattress Protector Be Made Of?

Waterproof mattress protectors are sometimes associated with the annoying sound of plastic, crinkling and crumpling as you toss and turn. Thankfully, present-day mattress protectors (the good ones, at least) are no longer made with plastic, so you won’t even notice them on there.

The best waterproof mattress protectors are made with natural materials such as cotton, bamboo, or Tencel (a cellulose fiber made by dissolving and drying wood pulp) on one side — the one that comes into contact with your skin — while some form of polyurethane is used in the waterproof barrier.

Although some companies use vinyl in their products, we recommend you go vinyl-free due to health concerns and environmental issues associated with this material.

Our top ten best mattress protector ranking is based on in-depth research, extensive data analysis, and a robust scoring system. We’ve looked into dozens of brands, studied different materials, and spoken to consumers and experts. Here are some of the factors we took into account when picking the best mattress protectors:

  • Is it waterproof?
  • Is it a good value?
  • What is it made of?
  • Does it sleep cool or hot?
  • Is it noisy?
  • Is it breathable?
  • Is it machine-washable?
  • Is it a trusted brand?

The Best Waterproof Mattress Protectors

Adoric Mattress Protector

Adoric Mattress Protector

At only $24, Adoric is one of the best value waterproof mattress protectors around. Rather than using polyester and PVC, as some of the cheap mattress protectors do, this little gem is made with soft cotton terry on the topside and TPU membrane back coating for the waterproof layer.

The product is entirely free from vinyl, PVC, phthalates, fire retardants, and other toxic chemicals. All the materials used in this mattress protector have been tested and approved by the relevant institutions, so you can sleep peacefully knowing this is a “clean” and safe product. No plastic also means no annoying crinkling sound when you toss and turn, and no unbearably sweaty nights.

Like most mattress protectors on our list, the Adoric works just like a fitted sheet, and this model fits mattresses up to 18” deep. Since this is used to protect your mattress from dirt, expect to wash it often. Washing is a simple process that is as easy as popping it in the wash!

SafeRest Premium Hypoallergenic Waterproof Mattress Protector

SafeRest Premium Hypoallergenic Waterproof Mattress Protector

This breathable mattress protector allows air to flow to your mattress and prevents the buildup of mold, mildew, and other nasties we’d rather not think about, which can help reduce allergy symptoms. SafeRest’s mattress protector is hypoallergenic, but it is also 100% waterproof, noiseless, and OEKO-TEX certified to be free of vinyl, PVC, phthalates, and other toxic chemicals.

The terry cotton fabric top feels smooth against your skin, and it also naturally absorbs the moisture which comes off the body. The protector captures the skin cells and dust particles which would usually accumulate on the mattress. That’s why the manufacturer recommends you wash the protector regularly.

With its durable materials and a ten-year warranty, this could be the right choice for you if you have kids, pets, or problems with incontinence. SafeRest’s mattress protector can take more than the average mattress protector.

Brooklyn Bedding Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector

Sometimes it’s worth paying a little extra for luxury and quality. In the case of Brooklyn Bedding’s wonderfully luxurious cooling mattress protector, the extra dollars make a whole load of difference. The protector is made with conductive material that draws heat away from your body and keeps you cool through the night. If you live somewhere hot, you know how dreamy that sounds.

The materials instantly feel luxurious and silky to the touch, like fresh linens do in five-star hotels. And, of course, the mattress protector doesn’t only feel great; it also does an outstanding job at keeping your mattress clean and new. The hypoallergenic design protects against bacteria, bed bugs, and dust mites, so it is excellent if you are susceptible to allergens.

This protector wouldn’t make it to our list if it weren’t waterproof, so you can rest assured that no liquid will get through to your mattress. All this quality comes at a price, but, if you’re able to invest $99, we’re sure you won’t regret it.

One’s Own Renewable Organic Mattress Protector with Tencel and Eucalyptus

One’s Own Renewable Organic Mattress Protector with Tencel and Eucalyptus

This breathable mattress protector allows air to flow through its fibers, keeping you cool and the mattress clean and free of mold and mildew. The protector is made with Tencel and Eucalyptus fibers. These tiny, natural fibers wick away oils and moisture, creating an inhospitable environment for dust mites and other microscopic beings.

Like most other mattresses, this one also uses TPU in its waterproof layer, so expect a quiet and cool night sleep. Although One’s Own is recommended by organic mattress brands such as Avocado, it is not entirely organic and natural — but it is as close as it gets when talking about mattress protectors.

So, before you buy this, know that the product is not GOTS® organic certified, nor Greenguard Gold certified, nor made entirely with certified organic materials. And, although the protector claims to be biodegradable, it is referring only to the top layer. With that said, it is an excellent option, and makes good use of natural materials, more than any other brand.

  • Contains natural materials
  • eucalyptus fiber
  • Partially biodegradable

  • Not GOTS certified
  • Can sleep hot
  • Can leak

It’s great for those of us who suffer from allergies, as it is built to be hypoallergenic, and protect from dust mites, mold, and bacteria.

Hundreds of customers say that this mattress protector is well designed and easy to slip on and off. Because its whole purpose is to protect the mattress from dirt and stains, expect to wash your mattress protector often (check the label for manufacturer’s instructions). Thankfully, that doesn’t mean hours of scrubbing and drying out, like it would if a liquid was to seep into your mattress.

Instead, it’s as easy as slipping the mattress off and popping it into the washing machine. The Adaptive Shield Performance Mattress Protector is designed to be noiseless, but some customers report a slight crinkle noise when they move around.

  • Very soft and smooth

Utopia Bedding Waterproof Bamboo Mattress Protector

Utopia Bedding Waterproof Bamboo Mattress Protector

You know when you’ve made your bed with lovely fresh linens, and it looks and feels fantastic? But then you took yourself in and noticed the fitted sheet coming off at the corners and bunching up? I’m sure you’ll agree that there is nothing more annoying than that.

The Utopia Bedding Bamboo Mattress Protector features well designed elastic borders, which stretch over the mattress and keep the protector tightly in place. Perfect for restless sleepers and children! The protector is made, at least partially, with bamboo fibers, which are good at dispersing heat, but some customers say it sleeps a little hot. The material is durable, so will effectively protect your mattress for years.

Like all high-quality mattress protectors, this one is hypoallergenic, so you won’t have to worry about nasty allergic reactions, runny noses, or itchy eyes. Overall, this is a quality budget waterproof mattress protector.

  • Elastic design
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Not expensive

LINENSPA Premium Smooth Fabric Mattress Protector

LINENSPA Premium Smooth Fabric Mattress Protector

This hypoallergenic and vinyl-free mattress protector blocks dust mites and other allergens from taking over your mattress and coming into contact with your skin. It is completely waterproof, thanks to its polyurethane, so you can rest assured that your mattress will be safe even in the case of spills.

People love this mattress protector because it is super thin and light-weight but still works well. It fits mattress snuggly and doesn’t tend to come off at the corners or bunch up. However, do not buy this is you have an extra thick mattress, as the LINENSPA mattress protector is not as deep as others.

Although it is a budget option, it still does what it promises by protecting the mattress and keeping you cool through the night. However, it can be a little noisy (nothing too loud, but a slight crinkle sound when you move).

  • Very soft
  • Good for children
  • Ten-year warranty

  • Noisy
  • Doesn’t fit thick mattresses
  • Liquid sits atop the protector

Coop Home Goods Lulltra Waterproof Mattress Pad Protector

When it’s hot outside, there is no better feeling than slipping into a fresh, cool bed. This Coop Home Good waterproof mattress protector is made with a blend of polyester and bamboo, the latter of which has natural cooling and moisture-wicking properties. That means you’ll feel cool and dry through the night and won’t wake up feeling all sweaty.

The waterproof membrane works well against spills, but is still breathable and light, and manages to be crinkle-free. Also, this is an excellent choice if you have an extra thick mattress, as it is designed to fit deep mattresses. The product is OEKO-TEX certified, so it is free of PVC, vinyl, phthalates, and other harmful chemicals, making it safe for everyone to use.

However, it does contain polyester, which some people prefer to avoid. Some buyers report the protector doesn’t always stay in one place on the mattress and tend to slip around a bit.

  • Cooling
  • Soft
  • Fifteen year warranty

  • Contains polyester
  • Not durable
  • Slips and slides on the mattress

MALOUF Sleep TITE PR1ME Smooth Waterproof Mattress Protector

This fitted-sheet style mattress protector is made with an H2PRO membrane that allowed air to flow through, but repels liquid, keeping your mattress safe and clean.

The top layer is smooth and soft, and the product is made with people who suffer from allergies, eczema, and asthma in mind: it is hypoallergenic, and will help reduce symptoms such as a runny nose and itchy eyes.

It is vinyl, PVC, and phthalate-free. It is, however, made with polyester.

  • Fits extra thick mattresses
  • No bunching or shifting
  • Hypoallergenic

  • On the expensive side
  • Not the most waterproof
  • Warranty sometimes not honored

Do I Need a Waterproof Mattress Protector?

In short, yes. A lot of time is spent sleeping on your mattress, so it will get worn out quicker than you think. Whether you spill coffee on it or not, moisture (from your body, from the air, and even from the walls) can easily seep into the mattress, accumulating over years of use and ultimately wearing it out.

A waterproof mattress protector will prolong your mattress’s life, but will also protect it — and you — from dust mites, mildew, and other microbes. If you suffer from allergies, a mattress protector is especially important, as it will reduce the chances of you coming into contact with allergens.

You’ll want to get mattress protectors for your kids too. Whether they wet the bed or not (we all have at some point in our lives, so no point being squeamish about it!), a waterproof mattress protector will reduce the effects of small accidents, and make life easier — and healthier — for the whole family.

What Material Should I Choose When Buying a Waterproof Mattress Protector?

Here at RAVE Reviews, we tend to go with natural and environmentally friendly materials as much as possible. Not only because they are better for the environment than plastic derivatives, but in the case of waterproof mattress protectors, they also a lot more comfortable.

Rather than choosing a polyester mattress protector, go for one made of cotton, bamboo fiber, or Tencel. Tencel is a brand name for a type of lyocell and is produced by dissolving wood pulp and using a unique drying process called spinning. Like cotton and bamboo, Tencel is breathable and less susceptible to microbial growth than other materials.

The waterproof layer in the mattress protector is often made with PVC plastic, which tends to be cheaper but also hot and noisy, or with Thermo Polyurethane (TPU), which is a little more expensive, but also cooler and quiet. As much as we love a bargain, we’d say that a few extra pennies are worth it in this case.

Will a Mattress Protector Make My Mattress More Comfortable?

A mattress protector will help your mattress stay looking and feeling new for longer, but it won’t make it any comfier. If you want to change the way your mattress feels — by making it plusher, for example, or adding a cooling layer — you should get your hands on a mattress topper.

Mattress toppers are usually between 1″ to 3″ thick and are placed on top of a mattress to add some extra comfort. They’re useful if you’re unsatisfied with your current mattress, but you don’t want to buy a new one, or if you and your partner have different preferences when it comes to sleeping.

A mattress protector, however, is very thin — not very different from a standard fitted sheet — so won’t majorly change the way the mattress feels. If made with the right material, a high-quality waterproof mattress protector can help cool you down and can feel soft and silky on your skin.
