When we think of appliances in our kitchen, many of us think of the bigger fixtures first: fridge, microwave, dishwasher. While these appliances are important, it’s the smaller appliances that are the unsung heroes of modern kitchens.
Size can be deceiving, and it doesn’t always matter! Just think of where you’d be without smaller items like your coffee maker or toaster. These items make cooking in the kitchen much easier. And if you don’t own a blender yet, once you have one, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it. A blender is a staple appliance in any kitchen. Many recipes require blenders, while others don’t necessarily require a blender, but can be made much easier with one. Many blenders have a variety of settings and can be used to help you achieve exactly what you need for a particular recipe. They’re much more versatile than we may think.
Blenders are for more than smoothies
First things first: Erase the thought from your head that blenders are only good for making smoothies. The truth is, blenders can be used to make so many different things! They’re perfect for everything from smoothies, frozen drinks, and milkshakes to soups, dips, and savory purees.
There are a few different kinds of blenders, and these different types are suited for different purposes. For example, an immersion blender (or hand blender) looks nothing like a conventional countertop blender. This distinct design means that it’s better suited to certain types of tasks. Even among countertop blenders, there are lots of variations. Some blenders have blades made for ice, while other blades are designed for chopping vegetables and fruits. The volume, motor wattage, and blending container material are other key variables. The most common types of blenders include:
- Personal blenders
- Immersion blenders
- Conventional blenders
- High-performance blenders
With all the variety out there, we understand that the search to find the perfect blender can be a bit overwhelming. But don’t worry — we’re here to help!

Are blenders dishwasher safe?
While one blender may have parts that are dishwasher safe, that may not be the case for another blender. It’s best to check the manufacturer website or the manual that comes with the blender. Not all products and materials out there are intended for the dishwasher, and it can be really unsafe to put something in the dishwasher that doesn’t belong there. Additionally, some of the parts of your particular blender may be dishwasher safe while others aren’t.
For example, 99% of the time, the blender base is not dishwasher safe, while the blender cup as well as the blades, lids, and handles may be dishwasher safe. If you can’t find out for sure, it’s better to be safe than sorry and assume that your blender components are not dishwasher safe.
Are there different types of blenders?
As seen in this ranking, there are definitely different types of blenders. While pretty much every blender does basically the same job, some blenders may do certain things better than others, and some blenders may be targeted for specific tasks.
For example, one blender may be really good at crushing up hard ingredients like nuts, while another may be better at blending soft ingredients like fruits. And, as shown above, immersion blenders look completely different than your average blender and are used a bit different than your average blender is used.
What can a blender be used for?
When you think of a blender, I can guarantee you automatically associate it with 2 things — smoothies and milkshakes. And it’s true! A blender’s job is simply to blend things together, and what do you blend more often than smoothies and milkshakes? Not many things. But the truth is, blenders are extremely versatile and can be used for tons of stuff besides milkshakes and smoothies. (Not that milkshakes and smoothies aren’t delicious.) From dips to soups, to sauces, to hummus, to cappuccinos — you name it! Nearly anything that needs to be mixed together can easily be made using a blender.
What are the best blenders?
There are tons of amazing blenders out there, but we personally believe the best blender overall is the Ninja Professional Countertop Blender. This blender is hardcore, packing in 1100 watts of professional performance power with 3 speeds, plus a pulse function and a specialized single-serve function. But all of the blenders in this ranking are excellent choices — be sure to check out the full list above.
