The knife is among the most ancient tools humankind developed. Whether used to hunt, fight, build, or create shelter, knives have always been foremost and fundamental throughout human history.
Despite all the massive changes that have shaped our current era, the knife shows no signs of becoming obsolete as a crucial everyday carry tool. Whether it is used for opening packages, breaking down cardboard boxes, carving feather sticks for a campfire, or cutting a sandwich in half, more and more people are discovering the importance and utility of carrying a capable knife on their person everyday.
Indeed, in the last decade we have seen a massive increase in the variety of pocket knives available, and the diversity of styles, materials, designs, and techniques employed in knifemaking. Today, the world’s oldest tool has never been more available, and the options have never been better.
The sheer number of high quality pocket knife manufacturers, designers, and companies on the scene today make the task of selecting the best pocket knife very tricky, especially if you are new to the world of cutlery.
With so many options available and so many varied needs you might have for a pocket knife, discovering the best pocket knife for you can be a difficult task. Fortunately, out of the many great options, we narrowed down a list of some of the very best pocket knives for you to consider for everyday carry.
Before we get started, a brief word about the methods used in this list are in order. First, choosing the best pocket knife is a highly subjective endeavor. Different pocket knives better serve different people. We selected 20 knife models from different manufacturers and companies to showcase. Our goal was to present a diverse array of options, knowing that we all have different needs and preferences when looking for the best pocket knife.
Secondly, we restricted the price range of our list to approximately $20-$300. There are certainly knives that cost much less (and they tend to be lower quality), and much more. However, our chosen price range includes some of the best pocket knives available today. Some options offer great value at a lower price point, while others offer premium features, materials, and design at higher price points. Your needs, budget, and interests determine which pocket knife is best for you.
Finally, we scored each knife in three categories, each weighted at 100 points: blade, handle, and lockup/deployment.
Under the blade subscore, we considered the shape, sharpness, design, and steel of the blade, and its effectiveness in cutting, edge retention, durability, and versatility.
Under the handle subscore, we considered ergonomics, comfort in extended use, traction, and how it carries in your pocket.
Under the lockup/deployment subscore, we considered the strength and safety of the locking mechanism, the ease of opening and closing the knife, and the efficiency and smoothness of the pivot mechanism.
In all three of these categories, value, materials, design, originality, and utility are taken into account to help you find your best pocket knife.
The Best Pocket Knives for Everyday Carry
When trying to find one knife that could qualify as the perfect everyday pocket knife, we couldn’t ignore the Benchmade Griptilian. Based in Oregon City, Benchmade Knife company has spent the last few decades building up a signature reputation for making premium pocket knives.
Their Griptilian line is among their most popular for some very good reasons. Boasting both a full 3.4” blade and a mini 2.9” blade option, this knife provides superb utility and capability in all cutting tasks. Whether large or small, or in the classic drop point, sheepsfoot, or tanto style blade, this knife covers anything you might need, justifying the Griptilian name.
Benchmade’s handsome styling and signature Axis Lock mechanism makes for superbly strong lockup and easy deployment and disengagement when opening and closing the knife.
Furthermore, Benchmade offers this line in both an entry-level configuration, with polymer handles and CPM S30V steel, and a premium line with sculpted G10 handles and CPM 20CV steel for increased performance and wear resistance.
Whatever your budget, size needs, blade shape, and steel preferences, the Griptilian line is an everyday carry choice that cannot be faulted or ignored. Combined with Benchmade’s legendary craftsmanship and warranty service, this knife more than earns its place as one of the best everyday carry pocket knives you can own.

Spyderco Paramilitary 2
Spyderco knives claim many unique traits when compared to the rest of the knife industry. Innovation is at the heart of Spyderco’s knife making craft, and this commitment to innovation and constant quality improvement (or CQI as Spyderco commonly abbreviates it) is evident in all of their knives. No other production knife company today seems able to match Spyderco’s willingness and ability to experiment with unique designs, cutting edge steels, and innovative locking mechanisms.
While there are many solid contenders in the Spyderco lineup, the Paramilitary 2 stands out as one of the greatest, most enduring designs Spyderco has ever produced. With its signature Spyderhole for easy deployment, the ultra-strong compression lock, unrivaled ergonomics, and availability in numerous steel types, the Paramilitary 2 sets itself apart as one of the best everyday carry options of all time.
Depending on what specific traits you need out of your blade steel, the Paramilitary 2 has you covered. It is continuously available in CPM S30V, CPM S35VN, CPM S110V, and Maxamet as regular production models. Lion Steel TRE
Lion Steel, based in Maniago, Italy, has been at the forefront of Italian knife making for several years, and for good reason. Their designs are characterized by precision, elegance, utility, and strength. While many products from Lion Steel make for excellent everyday carry options, the Lion Steel TRE is particularly notable.
Featuring precisely sculpted and machined scales, a stout titanium framelock, and a flipper for deployment, the TRE makes an ideal everyday carry choice if you are looking for a compact folder with lots of utility and refined design features.
Several versions of this knife are available as well, featuring a variety of G10 colors for the handle scale and other options for deployment as well. Other versions come in full titanium and carbon fiber front scales, and feature other options for deployment as well.
While all the versions are commendable, our choice is the base model in G10, featuring the integral, non-removable flipper tab (which gives this knife its name, TRE or Three Rapid Exchange).
This knife is a meticulously designed and executed small everyday carry pocket knife that is first rate for most users. Among the best pocket knives available today, this one is a solid choice.
RAVE Meter: 97Shop Lion Steel TRE
Titanium framelock knives continue to multiply, with good reason: They are reliable, easy to use, and you know, they’re made of titanium! Some everyday carry options of this sort still set themselves apart through simplicity, precision, and utility.
The Kizer T1 is most definitely this sort of knife. The handsome titanium handles are contoured well for in hand comfort and feature a sharp minimalist aesthetic. The blade is crafted to slice fantastically well out of full flat ground CPM S35VN steel. With a 3.25” blade, the T1 strikes the perfect balance between capability and compactness, offering plenty of blade without being too long or weighty.
This knife is also one of the relatively few modern titanium frame locks that run on bearings while not being a flipper. Many users have strong preferences, as flippers have both their devoted fans and their devoted detractors.
If you prefer the slimmer fit that comes from the lack of a flipper tab and the more versatile grip options this design affords, the Kizer T1 is a strong contender for your pocket. The thumb studs deploy the knife reliably and smooth ball bearings flick it open readily.
The milled titanium clip holds the knife securely in the pocket and coheres well with the clean, minimalist design.
If you are looking for a titanium framelock with looks, functionality, superb slicing ability, and a relatively low price point, the T1 is one of the best pocket knives currently on the market.

Zero Tolerance 0470
Zero Tolerance has been making superbly engineered high-end folding knives for many years, and is well-known for their hard use tactical designs that are built like a tank. Their big, beefy titanium flippers are well-known and beloved by knife collectors and users everywhere.
However, in recent years, they have distinguished themselves by producing quite a few new high-end designs that cater more to everyday carry than to purely tactical applications. Their recent release, the 0470, is one of the best yet.
Featuring a 3.4” blade of premium CPM 20CV steel, and a svelte titanium framelock design, the 0470 strikes a perfect balance of elegance, compactness, and cutting performance. Its high flat grind and thin profile make this knife one of the best slicers Zero Tolerance has ever produced.
While function is king, form matters too, and this knife has it. The sculpted titanium handle and marbled carbon fiber inlay set this knife off as one of the most handsomely crafted everyday carry knives available today.
The flipper mechanism and ball bearing pivot provide snappy and smooth deployment and the framelock mechanism provides secure lockup for all your everyday carry cutting tasks. Elegant enough for the office and robust enough to hold up to hard cutting if needed, the Zero Tolerance 0470 definitely earns its place as one of the best pocket knives available.

Their ACE line of folding knives boasts many solid everyday carry choices, but their first release, the Biblio stands apart as one of the best. Manufactured with precision and elegance in Maniago, Italy, the Biblio sports an extremely high flat ground blade of premium M390 steel, a smooth ball bearing pivot, and both thumb hole and flipper deployment options.
The blade flips with authority when deployed and locks up securely with a very well-executed liner lock. Fantastic ergonomics and well-placed jimping on the spine make this knife a dream in hand despite its compact size, making it an ideal everyday carry choice.

Cold Steel AD10
There are a lot of factors that go into what you need out of your everyday carry pocket knife. Some of us work in offices, and well, this knife is not for them. But if you need a knife for extended heavy use and abuse on a construction site or out in the field, you can’t do much better than the Cold Steel AD10.
Cold Steel has always been known for championing the strength of their Triad Lock, a much stronger version of the classic lockback.
In one way or another, all of their knives boast excessive strength in hard use as their claim to fame. And let’s be really clear about this, the strength of the Triad Lock is quite undeniable. Only a fixed blade can beat out a Triad Lock for strength. If you need a folding knife that offers near absolute certainty that its lock will not fail, even under abuse, look no further.
But there’s more to the AD10 than simply its lock strength. Featuring a fantastically executed hollow grind and CPM S35VN blade steel, this knife not only stands up to abuse, it slices incredibly well, despite coming in with a whopping 4mm thickness! You’d be very hard pressed to find a folding knife that is more comfortable in hand for extended cutting use.
All of these features make the AD10 a knife that anyone looking for the best everyday carry pocket knife has to take seriously, especially if you’re looking for seriously hard outdoor use. While it may take up a lot of space in your pocket, this knife is a slicing machine that functions perfectly in the hardest tasks.
If you’re going to put your knife to that sort of work, the Cold Steel AD10 is a perfect choice, and definitely one of the best pocket knives you can get.

The blade is ground to a wicked slicer while still maintaining strength and durability.
The handle is designed to be comfortable and ergonomic while still offering tactile grip and traction in hand. The solid steel liner lock construction is reliable and makes for easy deployment and closing of the knife.
Now available in a range of handle scale colors, and durable D2 tool steel, this knife is a proven workhorse.
The Rat 1 is a simple, no-frills working knife designed for being used repeatedly, particularly for outdoor use. If you are looking for an everyday carry pocket knife to use extensively outside or on construction and remodeling sites, you should consider the Rat 1.
The durable design, well-executed robust blade, and extremely affordable price point make this knife a strong contender for the best bang for your buck you can get in an everyday carry pocket knife.
Among budget-priced, high performance folding knives, the Rat 1’s extreme utility, durability, value, and cutting performance set the standard by which other offerings in this category are measured. For some users, an elegant knife that combines cutting ability with a non-threatening appearance is an absolute must. The Gent, by Massdrop, couldn’t be more appropriately named.
This knife is a superb modern take on the traditional gentleman’s folder. Small enough to disappear into slacks and fit comfortably in an office or professional setting, the Gent packs vast amounts of cutting capability into a small, friendly, elegant, and unassuming package.
Featuring 3” of premium CPM S35VN steel, this small blade offers ideal wear resistance and toughness for everyday carry. A minimalist deep carry pocket clip helps the knife to carry comfortably and discreetly in formal settings.
Handle materials vary, depending on your preferences, coming in blue, green, and black G10 and also in the somewhat more elegant options of Honduran Rosewood and carbon fiber.
Despite its minimalist size, the Gent features a surprisingly ergonomic handle and a forward finger choil, allowing for superb control and precise cutting. The high flat ground drop point blade boasts excellent geometry for slicing, and a perfectly executed flipper tab and ceramic ball bearing pivot make this knife a dream to deploy and operate.
If you work in an office or formal setting but still want a fully capable knife in a discreet, elegant package, you would be hard pressed to find a better option than the Gent.

Columbia River Knife and Tool Pilar
Some knife designs follow conventional, well-established patterns, and achieve greatness precisely by following tried and true approaches. Other knives, however, break new ground, bringing fresh approaches to blade design, handle ergonomics, and everyday utility. Designed by Jesper Voxnaes, the Columbia River Knife & Tool Pilar is one of these kinds of knives.
For a knife of its compact size (with a short 2.4” blade), few knives can rival the Pilar for its comfort in hand. The ergonomics of this small but capable cutter really stand out and set it apart from many other smaller everyday carry pocket knife options.
Moreover, the ergonomic handle design is perfectly integrated with the blade shape and positioning. The stout, short sheepsfoot style blade is perfectly positioned for maximum control and precision in hand, even for extended use.
This design has become justifiably popular since its release due to its exceptional design and extremely budget-friendly price point. Now available in stainless steel handle scales, as well as a number of other options ranging from G10 to carbon fiber handle scales, the Pilar is easily one of the best small knives you can choose for everyday carry.
It’s also a knife that almost anyone can afford, which is a great point in its favor. Very few indeed will be let down by this compact, capable everyday carry choice. It’s innovative design easily makes it one of the best pocket knives currently available.

Fox Knives TUR
If you are looking for an elegant, gentleman-style everyday carry folder made with premium materials and designed with flair, the Fox TUR is a fantastic option. One of Jesper Voxnaes’ distinctive designs, this knife pairs a high degree of refinement with robust cutting capability and everyday utility.
The handle scales feature 3D milled carbon fiber along with a precisely machined titanium backspacer and pocket clip, both of which feature a handsome bronze anodization. One of the most striking features of the handle is its excellent ergonomics and ample room for a variety of comfortable grips.
Many smaller knives such as this one, measuring in at just under 3” of blade length, tend to be lacking in the ergonomics department where this knife particularly shines.
The blade is a handsome drop point, featuring a high flat grind with good belly for slicing and a robust blade stock of 0.14”. Despite being a slightly thicker (and stronger) blade, the well-executed flat grind comes down to a good thin dimension behind the edge, making a great cutter.
Deployment of the blade is via thumb studs and the pivot rides on phosphor bronze washers for a smooth, deliberate action. The blade locks securely in place with a robust and well-executed liner lock.
If you are looking for a knife that is all at once refined, robust, discreet, and capable, the Fox TUR is one of the best pocket knife choices available.

Kershaw has long been known for their extensive line of budget-friendly folding knives, and with good reason. While they have produced many solid classics over the years such as the Skyline, the Leek, and the Blur, some of their newest offerings really display new levels of knife making work.
The Bareknuckle represents Kershaw’s latest addition to their 777/Natrix line of folding knives, and really stands out as the best in the much loved lineup. Featuring elegant and tactile handle scales of anodized aluminum, and Kershaw’s patented sub-frame lock, the Bareknuckle deploys on ball-bearing washers via a well-engineered flipper tab.
For those who love snappy flipping action and smooth deployment, the Bareknuckle will not disappoint in the least.
The blade consists of the distinctive drop point/sheepsfoot style blade that characterizes the 777 lineup, which is known for it superb utility and cutting performance. The Sandvik 14C28N steel blade offers great performance and corrosion resistance, while still being relatively easy to sharpen and maintain.
This knife carries securely and discreetly in the pocket with a strong and low profile deep-carry pocket clip.
One other element of special note has to be its superb value. In a manner similar to the Civivi Praxis, the Bareknuckle does what very few knives today do, namely combining a budget price under $60 with higher end materials, engineering, design, and style.
This level of value is particularly notable among U.S. made knives, with very few offering the same levels of quality the Bareknuckle manages to achieve. For all these reasons, this quality knife from Kershaw makes a fantastic everyday carry choice for almost any user.

Boker Mini Kwaiken
Some knives are built for pure utility, others are built for elegance and style. Some bring both of these elements together beautifully, but usually there is some emphasis on one or the other.
If we’re being honest, the Mini Kwaiken, designed by noted American knife maker Lucas Burnley, pays quite a lot of attention to style. The aesthetics of the kwaiken blade design, particularly the way in which the blade completely disappears into the handle when closed, are extremely distinctive and striking.
There are various models of the Burnley Kwaiken available through Boker, both in the mini and full-sized versions. One of our very favorites, the Mini Kwaiken in full titanium scales, with ball-bearing flipper deployment, is showcased here.
The blade locks open securely with a sturdy inset liner lock, and the scales feature 3D contouring and an elegant pinstripe milling pattern that adds texture without being overly aggressive or hard on the pocket.
The kwaiken style blade in D2 steel is ground thinly and precisely for excellence in nearly all everyday carry cutting and slicing tasks. We should be very clear that because the Mini Kwaiken achieves high marks for style does not mean it would not function superbly as an everyday carry pocket knife.
While the upswept blade may not be ideal for every task, it excels at all cutting tasks that depend on a knife having good belly and thin grind. If you are looking for a compact gentleman’s flipper that maximizes elegance without sacrificing utility, the Boker Mini Kwaiken is a great choice.

The Civivi Knives Praxis is one of the first folders in the Civivi line. Committed to offering something extremely unique to the current knife market, Civivi provides valuable, budget priced everyday carry knives with high-end, premium construction features and design.
And make no mistake about it, they have already succeeded. While there is a number of new offerings from Civivi that could merit mention, our choice is one of their very first knives to be released under this line, the Praxis.
The Praxis features a generous 3.75” blade with a high flat grind and an attractive machined satin finish. Ground extremely thin at the edge and with lots of belly for slicing, the Praxis is an extremely effective cutter, and the generous forward choil allows for easy and consistent resharpening of the 9Cr18Mov steel blade.
However, the fit, finish, and engineering really distinguish this knife. For a budget-friendly option under $50, the Praxis does what few, if any others do currently, offering ball-bearing flipper deployment with deep attention to tolerances, fit, and finish.
The liners of the knife are skeletonized and anodized for a distinctive appearance, and the knife carries extremely well with a deep-carry pocket clip. A wide range of G10 scale colors are available as well.
While all the knives on our list offer something distinctive, the Praxis really stands out in how it brings together features that are usually far apart: high-end precision and action on the one hand, and budget pricing on the other.
For anyone looking for a budget-friendly everyday carry pocket knife that is a workhorse in style, the Praxis is an ideal choice and definitely one of the best pocket knives you can get, especially at its price point.

Steel Will Intrigue
Since its release, the Steel Will Intrigue has become something of a sleeper hit as a budget everyday carry option. Featuring lightweight, durable FRN handle scales, D2 blade steel, snappy flipper deployment, and two size options, the Intrigue model is well on its way to becoming a new classic in the realm of budget-friendly, high-performance everyday carry knives.
One of the key features setting this model apart from similarly priced options like the Ontario Rat 1 and the Civivi Praxis is the striking, slim blade. The Intrigue features an elongated drop point blade that lends itself perfectly to precision or piercing tasks.
The needle-like, precise tip make this knife ideal for detail work and for many everyday carry tasks involving precise cuts through paper or cardboard. Despite its narrow blade profile, the edge grind on the Intrigue is executed extremely well for slicing, making this knife an excellent contender for most everyday carry tasks.
While its slim profile won’t lend itself to certain forms of hard use (for that role, consider the Cold Steel AD10 or the Ontario Rat Model 1), the Intrigue offers refined, precise cutting power in an extremely well-executed and budget friendly package.

Lets face it, sometimes bigger is not better. Sometimes the knife you need is the knife you have on your person at all times. There’s no knife that’s easier to keep on you than the James Brand Elko. This one is as minimalist as pocket knives can get, coming in at about the size of a USB drive, or 2.6” closed.
The knife is non-locking (a slip joint), features a 1.74” drop point blade, and deploys easily with a nail nick. Featuring an attachment point on the butt of the knife that functions as a pry tool, screwdriver, cap lifter, and keychain attachment, this little knife packs a lot of utility into a tiny package.
Whether it ends up a permanent fixture on a keychain, or disappears into the watch pocket of your jeans, the Elko offers significant cutting performance for its minute size.
A full range of anodized aluminium color options are available for the handle, as well as a stout titanium version and a recently released green micarta version. Whatever your color preference, this capable minimalist design can deliver it.
If you need something ultra small that can still handle basic cutting tasks, it’s hard to do better than the James Brand Elko. While its size definitely means it is only intended for certain tasks, the clean design and utility still make it a great choice among the best pocket knives.

TOPS Mini Scandi Folder
TOPS Knives are primarily known for their outdoor and bushcraft line of fixed blades, however there is one folder in their lineup that stands out as an excellent everyday carry choice, especially if you are looking for a knife geared more towards word carving, outdoor tasks, and camping.
The Mini Scandi Folder features the much loved Scandinavian (or Scandi) grind, which is ideal for biting into wood for carving, notching, and even light splitting of kindling. The grind is well-executed, crafted in Maniago, Italy, and features a reliable ball-bearing flipper for deployment, locking solidly in place with a well-crafted liner locking mechanism.
Continuing the aesthetic theme of this outdoors-style folder, the handle’s natural canvas micarta scales offer durable grip and attractive styling. While the style and primary function of this knife are geared more towards outdoor and bushcraft use, the 3.25” blade will also serve most users well as a general purpose everyday carry pocket knife.
While the Scandi grind may not be ideal for all tasks, like food prep or cardboard cutting, it is certainly adequate to cover most daily carry needs, including those involving wood.
